Show on Garibaldi Antonino Pietropaolo Parghelia


In occasion of the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Unification of Italy, this Municipal Administration will recall the figure of a brave partisan of our city: Colonel Anthony Pietropaolo, born in 1843, a brave soldier who has contributed unification of the country. He believed the ideal of a united Italy joined, just seventeen, the troops of Giuseppe Garibaldi in Sicily and fought in Faro, Maida and Soveria Mannelli and obtained the rank of Lieutenant Field Artillery, then went to Naples Garibaldi and participated in the battle of the Volturno, where he was wounded. He was present, along with the Hero Two Worlds, the famous meeting of Tean and participated, then, for three years, the suppression of brigandage. The shape of this hero of our land is so significant that Edmondo De Amicis drew inspiration from one of the events referred Pietropaolo was the protagonist for the novel "Fortress". In June 1866, by Lieutenant 20th Infantry Regiment, fought valiantly to Custoza, injured and earning a silver medal for military valor. In March 1882 he was given command of a company at the Military College of Naples "The Nunziatella, where he was among the students, the young Vittorio Emanuele III of Savoy, of which he was master of fencing. In 1885 he was participating in the expedition to Massawa Africa captain.


African experience is a precious and so far no known evidence for correspondence. Our hero was placed in charge of 11. A company of the 15th Infantry Regiment, and was in command of the fort of Arafali, standing in defense of the inhabitants and looting against the shepherds of the area of \u200b\u200bRas Alula. In January of 1886 confronted the robbers in an open field in a bloody battle that ended with the defeat of the Abyssinians, and for the military action, Pietropaolo received a written commendation from the Commander of the Presidio of Massawa and was decorated with a second medal for military valor on the field by General Tauhed Gene, commander of the shipment. He became lieutenant colonel in 1896, he served with the 60th Infantry Regiment of Spoleto. He was assigned, with the report of mobilization, the deposit of the 71th Infantry Regiment in Cosenza. Promoted to colonel July 16, 1901, the service ceased in 1902 with 43 years of service. Appointed Knight of the Order of St. Maurice and Lazarus and Knight Officer of the Crown of Italy, died in Parghelia February 2, 1922.

From this brief presentation, we understand how useful it is, today, we bring to the attention of our fellow citizens along with his example to many men and women who through their commitment and their sacrifice has made it possible for us to enjoy democratic rights now guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic. The Town Council wants to remind Colonel Pietropaolo with an exhibition which will be placed in the memorabilia, including letters, weapons, documents, medals and photographs. The parish will remain open at the museum next to the Shrine of Mary Portosalvo of the 19, 20, 21 and 22 March, from 10.00 to 12.00 and from 16.00 to 18.00. The inauguration will take place March 19 at 10:00 am with a brief conference with the participation, in addition to regional authorities, and civil and religious, the Mayor Maria Brosio, Professor. Meligrana Luciano, Elena Pietropaolo and Antonino Pietropaolo, namesake grandson of the hero Garibaldi. All citizens are invited to attend.
